No one knows for sure who it was that was buried in the barrows of Sutton Hoo, in Suffolk, England. Some say it was a great Viking leader. Some say a Nordic King of England. Still others say Jimmy Hoffa.

Whoever it was, it was clear that he was a powerful warrior of some sort. In 1938, led by the property owner, Mrs Edith Pretty, and archaeologist Basil Brown, the first of three archeological digs at the site found the remains of the Sutton Hoo warrior. He was buried inside a 90-foot-long warship with scores of precious items around him. Gold coins and armor, Silver plates and bowls, two swords with gold and garnet pommels, and, upon his head, the famous Sutton Hoo Helmet.

Further excavations found remains of other, apparently high ranking warriors or rulers, buried in similar mounds throughout the area. Workers at Sutton hoo have dubbed the site with its numerous mounds the "burial ground of kings." Indeed, the men buried in these mounds may well have been very early English kings or nobles. Most likely Viking conquerors who had carved out a small kingdom for themselves.
