As I write these Iron Man helmet descriptions, I hear Black Sabath's Iron Man playing incessantly in my head. I bob my head like some sort of adult Beavis and occasionally hold my index and pinky finger up in the air. Just a little snapshot into the warped and deviant life of a slightly retarded fan of all that is cool in the world.
However, while working on this particular one, the music has stopped, to be replaced by an eerie, reverent silence. Not to say that the other helmets aren't the cat's meow, but this Mark 03 Iron Man helmet is so stylish, so polished and so ... well ... so Iron Man, that I can't help but stare at it in silence. I'm not sure I can say that I like this one the best, all of the helmets are ridiculously cool in their own way, but this helmet actually transforms Iron Man from a background hero of my childhood (far behind Batman and Nightcrawler) to a full-fledged, world-class superhero.
The helmet is made of hand forged steel. It's painted in Iron Man's iconic Maroon and Brass and has a beautiful flawless finish. The designers of this helmet actually got to hold the original Stan Winston Studios prop while making this, so you can be certain that it is an exact copy of the original worn by Robert Downey Jr.
Besides the design itself, one of the coolest things is the display stand. It's a light-up display stand, which means you can put the helmet on the stand, hit a button, and the eyes of the helmet glow, just like the ones on the Mark 03 helmet in the Iron Man movie.
The helmet is 9 inches tall, 13 inches long and 8 inches wide. Only 1,500 of these are being made, which is actually a very short run, particulalry when considering how big of a blockbuster this movie will be. It comes with a hand-numbered certificate of authenticity and a voucher for one night with Gwyneth Paltrow. (editor's note: That's not even remotely true. Well, the hand-numbered thing is true. I meant the Gwyneth Paltrow thing). Well, okay, there's no Gwyneth Paltrow voucher, but I hear she has a real Iron Man crush, so if you wear this around her ... well, you never know.
