Ahh, Arwen. Talked about for one entire sentence in the three Lord of the Rings novels, then brought in for a starring role and plenty of screen time in the movie trilogy. I guess when you have Liv Tyler playing the role, you certainly don’t want to confine her to one sentence. And you had better give her an awesome sword.
That’s just what WETA workshops did. (WETA is the company that designed and produced all of the props for the films, for those of you who have lived in a goblin cave for the last thousand years eating fish and mumbling about your “Precious”). Hadhafang never actually appeared in the Lord of the Rings novels, but Director Peter Jackson did a great job of assimilating it into the Middle-Earth mythology. He and his writers developed a complete and believable history for the weapon. The sword was first made for idril, Elrond’s grandmother. (Elrond is Arwen’s father, for those of you still eating fish). The sword was handed down to Elrond, then finally to Arwen.
We get a close and personal look at Hadhafang the first time Arwen makes her appearance in the “Fellowship” movie. She holds the blade to Aragorn and comments slyly, “What’s this? A ranger caught off his guard?” Which is subject of much grinning and knowing head nods among all of us D&D geeks out there.
