Before he was King of Gondor, Aragorn was merely Strider, a meek, 87-year-old Ranger traveling the forests of Middle-Earth. Unlike most meek, 87-year-old Rangers, though, Strider could cut a cave troll in two with one swing of his sword, then track a falcon on a cloudy day. (Bonus points if you can tell us what movie the second part of that quote comes from.)

Strider’s hand-and-a-half sword was a perfect complement to him. It was simple but had touches of style that implied it was much more valuable than it looked. He used it for many, many years. In fact, he used it for most of his life, long before he was presented with his final sword, Anduril.
The sword, designed by the creative staff at WETA, New Zealand, was very likely one of the hardest swords to design. You see, the staff had to make a sword that was beautiful to look at, but understated a the same time. They needed to incorporate Aragorn’s personality into a weapon that had to be relatively simple, yet still look lethal. Sure, Anduril is a beautiful sword, but the creative team could concentrate on making a fancy, beautiful sword. In Strider’s Sword, a much more subtle touch was needed.
The sword is a bastard-type sword, measuring a little more than 46 inches. The blade is about 36 inches and bears a wide fuller down most of its length. The blade is made from a tough, tempered 420J stainless steel. Guard and pommel are made from a polished and antiqued (if that’s possible) metal, and the wood grip is wrapped with two strips of high-quality leather, separated from each other on the waisted grip by a metal ring.

The sword comes with a certificate of authenticity and a stunning, screenprinted display stand (the graphics on it are Gondorian, in case you were wondering). If you get a chance, check out the scabbard on this sword (sold separately). It’s a beauty and comes with a ranger knife.

Although the term rapier has become synonymous with any narrow-bladed sword (particularly those with fancy hilts), the term rapier actually applied to only a select few types of swords. Rapiers were narrow (usually one and a quarter inches wide), quite long, fairly heavy, and usually had only a slight edge on them. The extremely long length of the rapiers made them a bit heavy and cumbersome, not at all the Errol Flynn or Zorro-type small-swords that most people think of.
