This is an excellent hand-crafted reproduction of a medieval knight's arming sword -- basically the weapon that the knight would carry with him wherever he went. This sword was worn both for defense and as a symbol of the knight's rank. The knight would have held the sword as one of his prized possessions, and would likely have asked the maker (or another smith) to engrave it with words and symbols that were sacred or important to him.

This arming sword is what sword-historian Ewart Oakeshott would have classified as a Type XII. It is a one-handed sword that has a relatively small fuller (The groove running along the blade), standard-sized hilt and relatively narrow blade that comes to an acute point.

This weapon would have been used primarily for slashing, although the acute point would have allowed the knight to thrust as well. The cross (hand guards)are fairly ornate, possibly indicating a late medieval style.

The blade is hand-crafted from 18-gauge high-carbon steel, with pommel and cross of durable brass. The grip is an authentic hardwood and the sheath is leather-wrapped wood. The pommel is slightly historically inaccurate because of the nut that holds it to the tang.

The Japanese katana was often worn paired with another smaller sword or dagger. The shorter sword, called a wazashi (also known alternately as Wakizashi and, occasionally, Fred) measured twelve to twenty-four inches in length. The dagger, a tanto measured six to twelve inches in length. Tonto, from the Lone Ranger, has nothing to do with Asian weapons, but for the record, he was 67 inches long.
