There's been enough written about Spartans these last few months to make even Tyrtaeus roll in his grave. (This last was a snobby, academic reference to a Spartan Poet. Please excuse our geeky writer.) Yes, the spectacular success of the movie "300" has kicked off a renewed Spartan fervor across the globe. We'd like to celebrate this wild Spartan mania with an authentic Spartan Lakonia, made with a pure, polished bronze hilt and a nasty, fully tempered 15-inch oak-leaf blade.

The Lakonia, named after the region of Greece ruled by Sparta, was one of the primary weapons of the hoplite. It was second only to the spear and was used when their opponents came in close. These very small short swords featured the oak-leaf blade shape common to most Greek swords. They were not much more than daggers, but in the the hands of a trained hoplite, they were unbelievably deadly.

This particular Lakonia is made as authentically as possible, with a hilt made from pure, solid bronze. The bronze is polished to a mirror shine, giving the sword an almost electric look to it and a thick, hulky feel. In fact, the solid hilt combined with the light, tempered blade give this short sword a fantastic balance and a wonderful grip.

The Lakonia comes with a leather-wrapped wood sheath adorned with bronze studs that match the hilt. The studs are set into a bronze cross-piece with small belt loops on either side. This allows the Lakonia to be worn on a thin leather thong or rope.

If you've caught the Spartan fever, then you might as well get the authentic weapon of the Spartans. And take some Ibuprofin, already.

The flintlock pistol was the greatest advance in pirating since the wooden leg. The concept was fairly simple: gunpowder was stuffed into the barrel. A lead ball, usually wrapped in some sort of fabric, was stuffed in. A hammer was then pulled back half-way and left that way until the gun was ready to fire. The pistol technically was not meant to fire in this position, although sometimes they were known to go off half-cocked (and yes, that is the origin of that expression). When the gun was ready to be fired, the hammer was pulled back all the way and the trigger was squeezed.
