The Pompeii Gladius was the pinnacle of Roman sword technology. Compact, powerful and rugged, the sword was capable of penetrating armor, bone and Gauls with cheery efficiency. It's V-shaped tip was made for one primary purpose: to stab. Romans occasionally used the sword to slash, but those who did were made fun of; The Roman philosophy held that while slashing was fun, the likelihood of killing someone with a slash was much lower than with a good old-fashioned thrust to the abdomen.

This particular Pompeii gladius features a polished golden wood pommel and guard, a nice contrast to the sea of dark wood that you normally see in typical Gladius. Its name, Croceus, actually means golden.

The gladius is, historically, quite accurate. The blade is a high carbon steel, with the typical V-tip and, as should be, no ricasso (unsharpened portion of the blade near the guard). It also features a brass shock-plate buried into the bottom of the guard -- a nice touch as most gladiuses have the plate resting against the guard instead of embedded (a more sturdy construction).

The Croceus comes with a dandy brass-edged red leather sheath and belt. The belt is a little thin, but comes in handy for quick donning of this sword. Two sets of brass belt loops give the owner of this sword several options when choosing how to wear it.

Now, about the pommel cap...

Custom Pommel Caps
Take your pick of any of the pommel caps that we have pictured below. Most of them are at no charge. There are, however, a few specialized, large caps that give the sword a much more ornamental look; we have to charge a little for those because of their cost to us, but it might be something interesting for some customers. If you want extra pommel caps, we can included them for $2 or $5 depending on the style (the large ones being $5, the small ones $2). So, take your pick and give your gladius a custom finish. To select your cap, just let us know which you want in the "Order Comments" section of our checkout process. If you don't mention anything, we'll send the antiqued cylinder cap as default.

This item comes standard with the Antique Cylinder cap. If you prefer, please select a different pommel cap below. These alternate caps add nothing to the price To order a different cap, simply mention the cap you want in the "Order Comments" text area during checkout.
Sphere Antique Cylinder (default) Nickel Cylinder Pyramid Round
Pyramid Wide Tower
For these large alternate pommel caps, we will add $3 to your order. To order, mention the cap you want in the "Order Comments" section during checkout. We'll add the price upon shipping.
