King Arthur: You don't vote for kings.
Peasant Woman: Well, how'd you become king, then?
[Angelic music plays...]
King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king.
Dennis: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
--From Monty Python's The Holy Grail
You may argue about the fairness of King Arthur's most unusual way of achieving power, but you can't argue with the enormous popularity that his legend has garnered. The fabled king has been portrayed on stage, on television and on the big screen countless times. We're hoping the real Arthur was more Sean Connery than Monty Python's Graham Chapman.
This sword captures the power, nobility and mystery of this English King and his mystical sword, Excalibur. This version of Excalibur is long--nearly four foot in overall length, with a wide stainless steel blade that's absolutely perfect for engraving on.
Every inch of the guards and pommel have been sculpted with decorative dragons among vine patterns. Why a dragon? Because King Arthur was known for traveling with a teeny tiny dragon that would it on his pen when he wrote. In fact, Arthur became known as Arthur "Pendragon" because of this and... Sigh. My editor is telling me to stop making things up, and to explain that Pendragon was Arthur's true surname, and the the dragon was his sigil. Editors suck.
The Sword of King Arthur comes with a stylish wooden plaque and polished brass mounting pegs so that you can proudly display the sword that some "moistened bint" lobbed at Arthur. I, for one, plan to get that entire scene from the Holy Grail engraved on mine.
