Okuma is also the name of a farmer who became part of a legend. He fell in love with a celestial maiden he met at a magical spring, Mori-no Kawa. They married and she bore two children. The daughter married and became a princess. The son, Satto, became Lord of Urasoe and King of Chuzan (the "Middle Kingdom") from 1349 to 1395. Many Okinawans consider Satto to have been the most important of kings. The Okuma Swirl pays tribute to the magical waters of Okinawa, whether that be at Okuma Beach or at the spring of Mori-no Kawa.
