In the very early years of the 1800s, Thomas Jefferson signed a decree authorizing the fledgling United States Navy to seize all ships belonging to the Barbary Kingdoms of Morocco, Tripoli, Tunis and Algiers; Be they pirate ships or merchant ships. So began four years in which the United States Navy resorted to piracy.

Alright, so it was actually privateering, and the United States was at war with the Barbary Kingdoms. Still, try explaining the difference to the merchant ship crews travelling to Morocco; The US Navy would swoop down on them, boarding and assaulting them if they resisted, much like pirates.

That said, the U.S. Navy no doubt took ships much as pirates did; with cannons and cutlasses, courage and wit. This cutlass is a tribute to the men of the first United States Navy and their brief stints as sanctioned pirates.

The lobstered and polished brass bell on this sword is boldly carved with the letters USN, proclaiming to all that the bearer was a member of one of the proudest countries on the planet. The spacious brass basket and compact curved blade made it ideal for ship-based combat.

This weapon is very similar to the Strongblade SBA-BRIGANTINE cutlass. The USN Cutlass has a slightly different grip, a scabbard that has a belt loop and is made of leather instead of leather-wrapped wood, and a rounded nut on the end of the hilt to secure the tang.

This sword is both light and comfortable. It's light enough to swing quickly and sits quite comfortably in the hand. The stitched leather grip is well padded and very comfortable to hold and the polished brass bell provides an extra bit of "umph" to any uppercut thrown at opponents. The blade is a compact, hand-forged, high-carbon steel.

Comes with a black leather military scabbard with an attached belt loop. Brass accents at the throat and tip complement the sword and add a touch of officer's class.
